Third-party controllers – enterprise XR angle

Apple has published detailed technical specifications that will allow third-party manufacturers to build motion controllers and other spatial accessories for Apple Vision Pro. By enabling third-party hardware development, Apple is expanding Vision Pro from a closed headset experience into a broader spatial-computing ecosystem. The new 74-page “Spatial Accessories” section provides developers with precise requirements for tracked hardware including LED configurations, sensors, Bluetooth communication, tracking performance and even an example motion-controller circuit board. This represents an important change in Apple’s spatial-computing strategy. Vision Pro originally launched without traditional motion controllers, relying primarily on eye and hand tracking. With visionOS 27, Apple is now giving hardware developers the tools to create specialized controllers, tracked tools and interactive accessories for the platform. The possibilities extend far beyond gaming. Developers could create purpose-built accessories for: • Medical and surgical training • Industrial simulations and guided assembly • Vehicle design and immersive driving experiences • Education and workforce training • Engineering, maintenance and design visualization For enterprise XR, that could be the most important part of this announcement.
