STAGEit – visionOS 27 projectors & Fabric API

We’ve been experimenting with the new projectors in visionOS 27 and adding support for them to STAGEit. But the more we experiment with visionOS 27, the more excited I’m becoming about the direction Apple is taking the platform. Fabric (Cloth API), projectors, Gaussian splatting support in RealityKit… as developers, these additions give us real confidence in the future of visionOS and products like Apple Vision Pro -whatever form those products might take in the years ahead. I think Projectors could add an awful lot to STAGEit and STAGEit Presenter. In the video, we take a first look at the projector settings and experiment with projecting light, images and video onto the world around you. Indoors, particularly in smaller and medium-sized rooms, the results are incredibly impressive. One thing that really struck me when watching the video back was seeing projection combined with our new fabric feature. The physics of the fabric, the lighting and the projection all work together so convincingly that at times it’s genuinely difficult to tell what’s real and what’s digital. Take the headset off and, of course, there’s nothing there! We then decided to take STAGEit on the road to Chawton, where Jane Austen lived, and try projecting onto some rather larger subjects, Chawton House and Chawton Church. The results were mixed, but also really interesting. The ability of Apple Vision Pro to live-scan buildings of that size is clearly limited, realistically, you’d need some fairly serious scanning hardware to do that properly — but even so, the results were surprisingly positive and gave us plenty to think about. There’s a bit of reflection and discussion at the end of the video for anyone who makes it that far. I won’t begrudge you if you don’t! Overall, though, we think projection is going to add an awful lot to STAGEit and STAGEit Presenter, opening up even more possibilities for helping people tell stories and create immersive presentations and experiences.
